Brief introduction: ESWL is the recommended therapy for around 80% of all stones, because it is safe, quick, effective and non-invasive. The effectiveness of ESWL depends largely on the composition and size of the stone. For stones measuring less than or equal to 2.5 cm, success rates are around 94%. Intended Use: ESWL works best for all sorts of kidney stones measuring between 5 mm and 25 mm and for ureteral stones in the middle and upper third. Softer stones such as uric acid stones etc. disintegrate very easily however hard stones like calcium oxalate monohydrate or cystine stones require multiple sittings.
Side-effect: Some patients will see blood in their urine for a time. This is normal as the stone particles pass. Occasionally, Discomfort or fever may occur as the stone pieces pass.
Contraindications:Absolute contraindications to extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) include the following:
- Acute urinary tract infection or urosepsis

- Renal ectopy or malformations (e.g., horseshoe kidneys and pelvic kidneys)
- Complex intrarenal drainage (e.g., infundibular stenosis)
- Poorly controlled hypertension (due to increased bleeding risk)
- Gastrointestinal disorders: In rare cases, these may be exacerbated after ESWL treatment.
- Renal insufficiency: Stone-free rates in patients with renal insufficiency (57%) (serum creatinine level of 2–2.9 mg/dL) were significantly lower than in patients with better renal function (66%) (Serum creatinine level <2 mg/dL).
